Nightcrawlers spawn on stone deposits at night, which means 3 rocks(northern rock base people like to camp at) and 4 rocks(southern rock base people like to base at) will most likely have one during night. If not you can still easily find these little worms by checking other known stone locations at night(be sure to have some cold resistance though). If your graphic settings are too good, nightcrawlers can be hard to see on the dark textured ground, which is partly why so many people overlook them or just forget they exist. They despawn at daybreak.

Only problem is that late game stone deposits are rare, which makes crafting potions very difficult.

I concur. Nightcrawlers are difficult to impossible to find at late game. Or you have to travel a lot. It's up to your chance to find it before. We need to change that.

It should not be too difficult to find them.Just try to bear in mind that do not waste too much time and try to be flexible.
